Alexandra Ardelean

Hey, happy new year! I hope you're having a great start to 2024. I'm Alexandra from Incorpo.ro, and today we're going to talk about the one thing that causes fear in people about their money: overdraft. It doesn't matter if you're a natural spender or a natural saver, the fear of overdraft is real. And it doesn't go away with a decision to be wise with your money. So today, I'm going to share four reliable budgeting tricks that will help you avoid overdraft and take control of your money.

La peur du découvert

The fear of overdraft is real. It's the fear of not having enough money in your account to cover your expenses. It's the fear of not being able to pay your bills on time. It's the fear of not being able to buy the things you need. And it's the fear of not being able to save for the future.

But here's the thing: overdraft can happen to anyone, regardless of how much money they have or how well they manage their finances. It can happen when you least expect it, and it can happen in sneaky ways, like when you make a buy now pay later purchase and forget about it, or when you have monthly charges for things like subscriptions that you don't use anymore.

So today, I'm going to share four reliable budgeting tricks that will help you avoid overdraft and take control of your money.

Trucs de budget

Truc n°4 : Réduire les budgets

I'm a natural spender. So when Winston and I started budgeting together, I was concerned about overspending in our budgeting plan. But then I remembered how my parents managed their money during financial hardship. They used cash envelopes for each budget category. When the cash was gone, they stopped spending.

So I created a wallet that would help me stay accountable with my cash spending. The wallet has an envelope for each budget category: groceries, eating out, clothes, etc. When I go shopping, I only take the envelope for that specific category with me. This way, I can't overspend.

Truc n°3 - Catégorie Divers

A zero-based budget is when every dollar has a purpose before the month begins. But what happens when unexpected expenses arise? For example, let's say we're having a birthday dinner at home and we realize we don't have any candles for the cake. We need to buy them.

In a zero-based budget, this would create anxiety because we didn't allocate any money for candles. But if we don't buy them, we won't be able to have candles on the cake for our daughter's birthday dinner. So what do we do?

Some bills are fixed and have no flexibility in payment dates (like rent). But others allow us to choose when we want to pay them (like mortgages, HOA bills, utilities). We use auto draft for these bills because it helps us space out our expenses throughout the month.

Truc n°1 : ajustez votre budget mensuel.

Life happens every day. And every day brings new opportunities and challenges that require us to adjust our plans accordingly. That's why it's important to adjust our budget every month based on expected expenses like post-holiday subscriptions that need to be canceled before they renew next month; Valentine's Day gifts; summer camp deposits; anniversary date nights; spring break expenses; etc.

If we don't adjust our budget monthly based on these expected expenses, we'll end up living in constant panic because our budgets will always be fluctuating due to life happening every day.
